From landscape architecture to home portrait Ben’s journey into illustration evolved naturally from his fascination with the built environment.

“I’ve always been drawn to the character and charm of the architecture around me, especially the way buildings hold stories,” he explains.

Trained as a landscape architect, Ben thinks daily about how spaces influence the way we live. Illustration became a personal extension of that thinking. A birthday sketch for a friend soon turned into commissions - because he doesn’t just capture how a home looks, he captures how it feels. From the placement of a sofa to the way light spills across a favourite armchair, Ben notices the small touches that make interiors come alive.

There’s something deeply personal about a home. It’s more than bricks and mortar - it’s memory, mood, and meaning layered over time. Last year, we worked with landscape architect and illustrator Ben Appleton, founder of Finelines Illustration, to reinterpret some of our favourite Sofology looks through delicate architectural sketches. From carefully arranged living spaces to the sofas we settle into every day, the results were quietly beautiful.

We caught up with Ben to talk about his creative process, his love of buildings, and what it really means to capture the feeling of home.

When a home comes to life

When a home comes to life

For Ben, the most rewarding moment is when a drawing shifts from technical to emotional.

“There’s a point when the building starts to come alive on the page. I work in a modern style, so I’m always balancing accuracy with expression.”

His illustrations are precise but never cold. Each line is intentional, considered, human. And because homes are so personal, the emotional payoff is huge:

“Capturing someone’s home - a place that means so much to them - and seeing their reaction is a wonderful feeling.”

How our surroundings shape us

Ben is acutely aware of how environments affect our daily lives.

“The layout of streets, the presence of greenery, the way light moves through a space - all of it affects our wellbeing and routines, even our relationships.”

Thoughtful design encourages calm creativity and connection, often in ways we overlook in the rush of everyday life. In interiors, this can be as simple as the perfect sofa to sink into after a busy day, or a corner that invites conversation and comfort.

What truly makes a house a home

What truly makes a house a home

For Ben, it’s never about perfection.

“It’s the layers of life within it - the memories, the quirks, and the imperfections.”

From furniture placement to marks on a wall, a home reflects the people who live there. Atmosphere over aesthetics. Feeling over form. That includes the sofa you choose, the cushions you arrange, and the spaces you fill with life.

Ben’s sketches remind us that a home is built in the details; it’s the quirks, the memories, and the moments that make a space truly yours.
