Nailing your Sofology interview with the

      STAR technique

Interviews can feel a little daunting, but don’t worry - we’ve got your back. At Sofology, we love hearing about real experiences, and one of the best ways to structure your answers is by using the STAR technique. It helps you stay clear, focused, and confident when answering those all-important interview questions.

      What is the STAR technique?

      STAR stands for:

      Situation

Set the scene. What was the challenge or task?

      Task

What needed to be done, and what was your role?

      Action

What did you do? How did you handle it?

      Result

What was the outcome? What did you learn?

This approach keeps your answers structured and helps you showcase your skills and experience. This method can be used for Scenario / Competency or behavioural questions.

How to use STAR in your interview

Here’s an example of how you can apply STAR to a common interview question:

Tell us about a time you went above and beyond for a customer?

Situation: In my previous role, a customer needed urgent help choosing a product as their order had been delayed, and they had a special occasion coming up.

Task: I needed to find a solution quickly to make sure the customer didn’t miss out.

Action: I checked stock across different locations, arranged a fast-track delivery, and kept the customer updated throughout. I also recommended some alternative options to ensure they had a choice.

Result: The customer received their order in time and left a glowing review. They even came back to shop with us again!

      Our tips for using STAR

      • Pick real examples – They don’t have to be big, dramatic stories - just moments that show your skills and approach.
      • Stay focused - Avoid going off on a tangent. Keep your answers structured and relevant.
      • Show the impact -  We love hearing about how you made a difference, whether it’s for a customer, a colleague, or the business.
      • Practice makes perfect - Try preparing a few STAR examples before your interview so you feel confident on the day.
